Jeff Selby of the Peninsula Trails Coalition and I were out scouting possible DBET routes to bypass SR20 when we ran across -- whoops, wrong words -- we met two cyclists who were returning to Port Townsend via that road. Check out what they had to say:
You can view the full interview of these two brave riders at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7daqXWQhRBk&feature=youtu.be.
Here's the ditch they were talking about:
We need to get the DBET done. Five years and 353 days to go.
Thanks for posting this. This portion of Hwy 20 is truly awful for bikers. As a local I plan to become more involved with getting the Discovery Bay East Trail completed and connected to the Olympic Discovery Trail. Wouldn't it be a dream to bike from Port Townsend to the Pacific coast on a designated bike trail!
ReplyDeleteFortunately the stakeholders (Jefferson County, the City of Port Townsend, Pope Resources, Jefferson County PUD, State Parks and WSDOT) seem to be very supportive of non-motorized multi-purpose recreational trails, so if you get a chance thank them and encourage them to support this DBET effort.
DeleteI agree! The only time I rode this trail I had to turn around because I was almost run off the road! A motor home's mirror came just inches from my shoulder... That is all it took. Hopefully this can become a "real" trail that is safe and enjoyable.
